“Night Watch”

Thank you Christina G. for recommending this 2024 Pulitzer Prize winning novel to me! Jayne Anne Phillips is the brilliant author who transports the reader to Civil War times and the harrowing story of hard-working West Virginians who live a challenging but good life up on their ridge. But as the War and all its hellish effects on humanity start to unfold, the innate being of each character changes.  Love, abuse, amnesia and hope are all factors in this story that focuses on a night watchman injured in war, a mother who no longer speaks, and a daughter who becomes the caretaker at much too young an age.  There are twists and turns throughout the book that surprised me and kept me guessing which I love. And because it’s historical fiction, it’s educational as well.
